FOOD WASTE

How to prevent Food waste

There are many different ways of preventing food waste and some are the most basic ways to do it.

-When shopping make sure to only buy the product that you will need, try to avoid sales. Like "buy one, get one free" can seem like a good deal and many times consumers buy two or more products thinking that they will use the products but unfortunatly, when they get home they end up using one. So what ends up happening is that the one that was on sale is never used and eventually it is thrown out. This is a waste of money.

-When there are left over foods from dinner, do not throw the food, keep it and put it in the fridge for the next day. Just because the food is in the fridge does not mean that it can be thrown away.

    - Trying to prevent supermarkets from throwing away food will help because big markets like Wal-Mart care about their customers and try to satisfy them so by protesting and pressuring those to donate food can help.

    - Food can be donated by the consumer themselves because when food is no longer wanted and is still edible then that food can be taken to a church or a shelter and that food can be dispersed among others. Community centers, soup kitchens, food pantries, senior centers, or childcare centers are also places to look for when donating food.

When organizations donate large amounts of food it helps a lot of people:

- In 2006, 282, 00- tons of food were collected and distributed to social welfare organizations. This was directed by the European Federation of Food Banks that was established in 1986 and in 2002 it had more than 18 European countries cooperating.

- In 2007, 10 supermarkets worked with Austria and feed more than 19,000 people by giving them food that otherwise would have been diminished from framers, industry and trade.
